About the New Music Ensemble
The New Music Ensemble is a student-led ensemble project at the University of Minnesota. The goal of this group is to provide students the opportunity to perform contemporary art music from the 20th and 21st centuries. The NME’s programming is, in one part, curated from performer interests, balanced against the practice of common styles and techniques found in the contemporary music canon. In the other part, the NME aims to program new works written by living composers, including our composition studios here at UMN and the established works from composers in the U.S. and beyond.
In their first year, the New Music Ensemble hosted four recitals of solo and chamber works including over 30 members. Their 2023-2024 programming includes the premiere of a new arrangement of Steve Reich's Electric Counterpoint, a performance at MetroNOME brewery in St. Paul, and a performance of works for Pierrot ensemble, culminating in a performance of Arnold Schoenberg's Pierrot Lunaire.
